Indian Music Days - English Version

This year, the Thuringian State Music Academy in Sondershausen, in collaboration with musician, choir director and long-standing academy lecturer Karlson Wagner, is inviting participants to a very special course experience for the first time:
For four days, music enthusiasts can immerse themselves in the world of North Indian classical music – four days devoted to the fascinating art of improvisation in the complex interplay of raga and tala.
Raga and tala – in the broadest sense, the Indian systems of melody formation and rhythm – are the central pillars of musical life on the Indian subcontinent. In addition to the relevant technical skills, it is above all the mastery of these two principles that enables performers to explore the nuanced depths of this ancient musical culture.
Today, hardly any two instruments shape the musical landscape of contemporary Hindustani music as much as the sitar and the tabla; at the latest since musicians such as Ravi Shankar introduced classical Indian music to a broad Western audience in the second half of the 20th century, both have become modern symbols of Indian instrumental music.
We also want to focus on these two instruments in this year's course programme: we are offering one course for beginners and one for advanced learners, who will be supervised by a professional musician on the sitar or tabla throughout the entire course. We are delighted to present an international team of lecturers made up of renowned musicians to the participants.
In addition to the lessons, participants can look forward to an evening concert with the lecturers and a final concert by the individual groups on the last day of the course. Furthermore, a daily yoga session will be offered in the mornings to help participants cope with the long periods of sitting during the lessons and practice sessions.
No previous knowledge is required for the beginner courses for both instruments (sitar / tabla). Instruments can be hired on request for a fee. It will also be possible to purchase instruments or have them repaired / serviced on site.
